TIME100 Art Series (Part II): What Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz Teach Us About Intentional Art Curation

Two stylish people posing beside a classic car at a gas station at night.

In the first installment of my TIME 100 Art series, we explored the profound visual narratives of painter Amy Sherald. Today, we are shifting the lens from the artist to the visionary collectors who champion them: Kaseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean and wife Alicia Keys. Recently honored on the TIME100 Art list, this Grammy-winning couple has quietly—and then very loudly—built one of the most significant contemporary art collections in the world.

Through their Dean Collection, they have amassed monumental works by Black artists, from Gordon Parks and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Kehinde Wiley and Derrick Adams. But it isn’t just what they collect that earned them a spot on the TIME100 Art list; it is how and why they collect. And as a Principal Art Consultant who curates for corporate and commercial spaces, their philosophy is one I deeply admire—and one that modern businesses can learn from. Here are three takeaways from Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz on the power of intentional curation:

1. Art is a Statement of Values (and Action)

Swizz Beatz famously coined the phrase, "By the artist, for the artist." Their commitment goes beyond just building a collection; they are actively changing the financial ecosystem for creators. Recently, they championed "Deans’ Choice"—a groundbreaking elective program through Bonhams auction house that allows U.S.-based sellers to direct a percentage of proceeds directly back to the living artist behind a sold work. When they curate, they are making a tangible investment in the creative economy.

The Corporate Takeaway: The art on your company’s walls can do the exact same thing. Thoughtfully sourcing works from living artists serves as a powerful extension of your company's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. It communicates your brand’s values, commitment to diversity, and active support of the community far better than a mission statement ever could.

2. Scale Creates Impact

Earlier this year, the couple debuted their collection at the Brooklyn Museum in an exhibition aptly titled Giants. They don't just collect art; they collect monumental, larger-than-life pieces that command attention and change the energy of the room.

The Design Takeaway: In interior design and commercial architecture, scale matters. A single, perfectly sourced, monumental piece of art in a corporate lobby creates an unforgettable anchor for the entire building, elevating the perceived value of the real estate.

3. Art Curation is an Investment in Legacy

The Deans don't view art merely as decoration; they view it as a cultural and financial asset. They are building a legacy that will outlast them.

The ROI Takeaway: Forward-thinking facilities managers and architects understand that art is not an afterthought—it is an investment. High-quality, intentionally sourced art protects project margins, increases employee retention, and enhances the overall value of the built environment.

Elevating Your Space

You don’t need to be a Grammy-winning mega-collector to bring museum-quality intentionality to your space. Whether you are an interior designer finishing a boutique commercial project, or a corporate executive looking to refresh your headquarters, the right art strategy changes everything.
